Personal COMPASS POSTER

BACKGROUND

This project encouraged us to “reach deep into your intuitive and unconscious minds” and use a mix of photography and vector illustrations to communicate an abstract idea in visual form, offering clarity, embedded meaning, and understanding to the viewer.

The goal was to visualize highly abstract ideas that source from our growing awareness of the deeper aspects of ourselves, by exploring design elements, typography, and diverse processes.

Process

In my artistic exploration, I began with vector-based designs featuring abstract circles, symbolizing the solar system, while incorporating the moon to represent new beginnings since that is the medium I am most comfortable with. The concept centered around self-comparison with others and the quote, "where you are is right where you need to be." Inspired by the creativity around me, I ventured into Photoshop, experimenting with abstract elements like marble and watercolor images from Unsplash, skillfully crafting space-themed scenes. This multidimensional approach allowed me to express my artistic identity and personal growth through captivating visuals.

Final Product

In my final poster concept, I set out to portray a deeply personal narrative, capturing the emotions of feeling lost and left behind while constantly comparing myself to my peers. To give the artwork profound meaning, I selected a poignant Rolling Stones lyric, "you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need." This powerful quote served as the anchor, breathing life into the circle with missing pieces, beautifully illustrating that sometimes life's journey takes unexpected turns, leading us to what we truly need rather than what we initially desire.

As I put the finishing touches on my project, I couldn't help but feel content with the aesthetics and the nuanced storytelling approach. I wanted the poster to resonate with viewers on a deeper level, evoking emotions without being overtly literal. The subtlety in its design allowed for multiple interpretations, making it more relatable to diverse audiences. However, in reflection, I couldn't help but wish I had incorporated more imagery to enhance the visual impact further, and perhaps evoke even more emotions.

One of the most significant takeaways from this project was the realization that abstract thinking, something I struggled with initially, could be harnessed to convey profound emotions and stories. This newfound appreciation for abstract expression has instilled in me a determination to develop this skill further in my future artistic endeavors. The process of creating this final poster taught me that I can successfully communicate complex emotions thoughtfully and imaginatively, a realization that has deepened my passion for art and storytelling.
